The pieces stood upon the board, ready for the fight, aligned like soldiers on a fresh battlefield. Each polished until the moonlight piercing the room positively glittered off them, the pieces looked like vampires in the sun. Designed to fight and to kill; and to captivate all the while. Wooden chess pieces that they were, they couldn't know how it felt to really be like that; the lethal weapon on the battlefield. But Jasper knew all too well, and there was something about the excitement of it that he missed. It might have explained why he had a sort of empathy for the game. Although equally he couldn't deny his fondness of playing it came from being so good at it.
It was less fun when he played against himself. When there was no enemy, there was no proper victory, and without a victory the entire purpose of the game was flat and devalued. He had been playing this game for so many years that his strategies were all perfected. But the perfection was wasted when he didn't have anyone to use them on. Still, it wasn't enough to completely take the edge off the fun. In a deliberately slow and pondersome movement, he slid a white pawn forward two spaces with the tip of one perfect marble finger. Then he sat back, and looked at the board. Then smiled a ghost of a smile.
One moment, he sat in the chair from which he controlled the whites, with which he always aligned himself; the next, he had swapped sides and was deliberating the move of his opponent. He moved so quickly that any human might have thought he had not moved at all; rather magically transported himself. It was a novelty that, no matter how much he exercised, always brought with it a feeling of smugness, of power. It was one of the perks of this cursed vampiric life he led. One of the many perks. He nudged a black pawn forward, then swapped seats again. The whites were going to win, but it would be a hard fought battle. An easy kill was less to savour.

Onyx walked into the room, and saw Jasper playing himself in chess, she smiled, and walked up, observing, hoping not to be noticed. After he moved his black pawn forward, she knew that the Whites would win, she stepped forward, "Ahh, the whites will win." she murmured, looking at Jasper.

Jasper had detected the addition to the flow of emotions in the room, but said nothing to greet his new companion. At Onyx' comment, he couldn't help but smile. "They always do," he replied, moving a second white pawn forward with a deft movement of his hand and then transferring so that the blacks mimicked the move. "Unless I have a volunteer to protect the blacks?" He was asking her to join the game, though it wasn't entirely obvious from his factual tone. He swapped seats again, deliberating the next move of the whites whilst watching Onyx from the corner of his eye.

Onyx smiled, detecting a challenge. "Hmm...well, I suppose I could." she said, making sure that he was offering.

Waving one hand casually, Jasper motioned towards the empty seat on the blacks' side of the table. "The troops send summons for you," he joked, moving a third pawn forward for the whites. He'd freed up space around his queen now. The gate was open, and the weapon of mass destruction was about to emerge. He smiled analytically at Onyx, waiting to see what she would do next. He'd started her pawns as well as his own; she wasn't facing any immediate disadvantage. Except his affinity for the game, which he intended to wield to the utmost.

Alice popped her head silently into the doorway. Curious, she looked to the future. Ahh. With that strategy, whites will win. She noted to herself. "Who's winning?" She asked innocently.

Onyx smiled, and moved a Black Pawn into the opening left, all the while, opening a space to her king, she gave an evil grin.

Alice grinned her perfect pixie grin. Now that strategy WILL work, She thought.

Alice's voice was just a hum in the background: Jasper's concentration was so fixed on the battle that her words didn't register. He eyed the pieces on the board, pondering his move. He was clearly not in a hurry; taking his time and slowly analysing his possibilities. He hesitated for a long while before deciding to play a slow, cautious game until he learned more about her strategy. He let one of his knights leap over its pawn guard and into play, watching Onyx' face all the while.

Esme descended the stairs in a flash and stopped at her daughter’s side. Alice was silently watching the chess game from the doorway. She flashed a smile showing her rows of pearl white teeth. Esme stood there silently watching Onyx and Jasper play the game, but the outcome was still unpredictable. It was always unfair for Alice or Edward to play because their gifts made it easy for them to win. Of course they could play with each other, that was always amusing to watch. Esme loved every one of her adopted children and thought of them all as her own. Besides the love her life, they were the only reason she did not go mad in this new life.
Alice was for sure well aware of her presence now. She had been acting strange lately in fact most of her children were. This worried her; Esme didn’t like to have any of her family upset. She leaned against the doorframe and shifted her gaze from the game over to Alice. So whose going to win? The question she really wanted to ask was what was bothering her, but if the others were around and Alice didn’t want them to know she knew she couldn’t get any information out of her daughter right now. She looked back over at the game that was still going on. It would be a few minutes before it came anywhere close to ending. They had been around long enough to master the game of chess. Alice’s facial expressions continued to change and she knew the reason. Alice always wanted to know the outcome of each move once it was made and she was sure that was what her daughter was doing right now.
Esme fought back a smile but whispered a soft laugh as she turned her attention back to the game. She stepped forward to stand behind Jasper this time. Alice’s response would still be heard even if she whispered it. Although the answer to her question would ruin the fun of the game for both Jasper and Onyx. Esme rested her hand on Jasper’s shoulder greeting both of them with a welcoming hello. Jasper...Onyx Hello She ran her figures back brushing the brown curls from her face while she waited for her children’s reply’s.

Alice turned to her adoptive mom. She smiled, flashing the ultra-white teeth she hid behind her porcelain lips. "Hello, Esme!" She greeted. "Very interesting, huh?" She asked, "I really wonder who has the upper hand!" She laughed. The sound was very nice. Like a bell. No, better than a bell. A musical tune. A musical bell, perhaps.

Onyx watched as he moved his knight, she carefully moved her left Bishop in front of her queen. Not letting any emotions show, with her best poker suit on, she smiled, and nodded to Jasper.

Was that a defensive move or an attacking move? From the expression on Onyx's face, Jasper really couldn't tell. Keeping his own face blank, but smiling inwardly, he moved the pawn in front of his left Knight two spaces forward, so that it was diagonal to one of hers. It was time to break the shell of the crab and get a glimpse of what lay underneath. Still smiling inwardly, he tensened the atmosphere in the room, taking full advantage of his power. They would all be on the edge of their seats now, and he hoped Onyx would be feeling the pressure. After all, he'd never said he'd fight fair. "Hello," he said warmly to Esme as he felt her hand on his shoulder, sparing her a glance whilst he waited for Onyx's move.

Alice giggled as she felt tense all of a sudden. Chances were that he would win.
(OOC|| I don't know how to play Chess (xD) so tell me if Alice is predicting the wrong person is going to win.)

[OOC - Lol. At the moment, it's evens. The pawns are largely unimportant, so the game will swing in someone's favour when the non-pawn pieces get taken. At the moment, I've tipped it to Onyx to start taking my pawns, but I'm opening gaps in her defences in doing so (and she in mine) so the game will get properly underway. But chess can be a long game, and I've never played it in UBBC before, so the winner won't win quickly. xD]
