Start from the beginning: In 1911, Esme broke her leg falling out of a tree she’d climbed. Her family lived on a farm on the outskirts of Columbus. The local doctor was away, and it was after dark by the time they got her to the small hospital in Columbus. A Dr. Cullen treated her. It was his last month in town. She never got over the experience.
Esme was the last of her friends to marry. She was thinking of moving West to be a schoolteacher, but her father didn’t think it was respectable for a lady to live alone in the wilds. The son of a family friend, a man with good prospects, wanted to marry her, and her father pressured her to accept. She was indifferent towards Charles Evenson, but not opposed to him. She married him in 1917 at the age of 22, and quickly found that this had been a bad decision. Charles’s public face was very different from his private face; he abused her. Her parents counseled her to be a good wife and keep quiet. When he was drafted to fight in WW1, it was a huge relief to her. When he came back in 1919, it was terrifying.
Shortly after his return, Esme discovered she was pregnant. The pregnancy was Esme’s catalyst to escape. She couldn’t let a child be brought into that home. She ran away in 1920 to live with a second cousin in Milwaukee, and then moved further north when word of her whereabouts leaked to her parents. She blended in easily, pretending to be one of the many war widows. She taught school in a small community outside Ashland. When her baby died in 1921 from a lung infection just a few days after he was born, she had nothing left. She had no idea that Carlisle was working in the little hospital in Ashland when she jumped off the cliff outside the town. Carlisle remembered her, of course, as the happy girl she had been at sixteen. He didn’t want her to die and so he saved her.
When she opened her eyes, in all that pain, and saw the face that she’d never forgotten in a decade, she was relieved. She was not really that upset to find out she was a vampire, but she didn’t take it as in stride as Emmett had. Still, she was happy to be with the man/vampire of her dreams. She did always have that maternal ache, and, as the physically oldest of the Cullen’s, she fell into a mothering role. ( Information was used from here

"Choices there are so many to make in life. From simple decisions of what to wear and what to eat to larger life changing choices. Was deciding to go to Forks with my dad a life changing choice. I wasn’t going to stay here forever just until things with get straight with Phil. "
Bella sighed closing her Diary and laying it on the pillow behind her. She had just arrived in Forks a few hours ago and Charlie was letting her get settled in. That was one reason Charlie was so easy to live with he never hovered around and watched you. She stood up and unzipped the only suitcase she carried with her. Grabbing a few items of clothing each time she walked past it Bella separated them hanging up and folding some. The radio was turned down so only she could hear it while she rearranged the familiar room. Only a few things had changed since the last time she was here. The rest of the house was entirely the same.
Bella walked over and clicked the radio over to her CD and started humming along while she uploaded the computer that her mom demanded she have. She had left Phoenix a few hours ago and her mother had already supplied her with a week worth of emails. She fought back a smile while twisting around in the seat reading each one and replying to all of them in one simple message. Renee was already wondering how Forks was and the truth was she didn’t know. It was six in the afternoon and she had been writing and unpacking all day. School was tomorrow and then she would be able to give her mother more details. It was simple enough to predict what she would say. “Forks in fine mom everyone is friendly and I have already made plenty of new friends.” Even if she was lying that would make her mother more comfortable about her staying with her dad. It had been years since the last time she visited and Bella was never here long enough to make friends. Of course the Charlie was already excited about Billy and Jacob; who had known Bella when she was younger, were coming over to watch the game and welcome her to town. Zipping the suitcase up Bella tossed it under the bed where it would stay still a break in school and she got to visit her mother again. She walked over and tucked the Diary in her pillowcase. Pulling the hair band from her arm she tied back her hair and took in a deep breath and opened the door.
When she was down the stairs Charlie was already sitting in front the television although there was almost an hour before the game. She smiled walking past him into the kitchen to start diner. Charlie offered to call pizza but she wanted to cook and calm down the nerves about the next day. School was going to be tough, she wouldn’t know anyone and it seemed that Charlie had spread the news of her coming to the entire town. She stirred the noodles and poured the sauce in a bowl to heat up. She could hear the television in the living room there was a little less than half an hour before the game started and Charlie’s friend Billy and his son would be here soon.
